Small Business Shoutout: Dunedin Pilates

Feel more relaxed, agile and stronger! This month we’re spotlighting local business owner, Camila Garcia of Dunedin Pilates. At a young age, Camila was diagnosed with scoliosis and when Pilates was recommended as a treatment, she was doubtful. However, after just a few classes, her pain had significantly improved and her life was changed forever. Camila started volunteering in a hospital, seeing firsthand how so many others could alleviate their pain through Pilates. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Public Health from the University of Alabama and completed her thesis on Pilates. She immediately began her own journey to increase her knowledge and enhance her teachings. In just three short years, Camila has completed over 400 hours of teaching & training to obtain the proper certifications for the use of all Pilates equipment in her classes. Whatever your ailment may be, Camila can provide the proper equipment and technique to treat it.

Camila comes from a family of entrepreneurs that immigrated from Brazil 35 years ago, “I definitely have that entrepreneurial spirit and background,” and you can tell that to be true the moment you meet her. When she first came to Dunedin, Camila immediately fell in love with the community and the active lifestyle of the locals. Camila takes a traditional approach to Pilates by keeping sessions limited to no more than three clients at a time. This allows her to provide each client with ample attention and ensure their technique is perfect. Leading to everyone having a rewarding workout every time.

Common exercises done at standard commercial gyms have been known to lead to injury, soreness and fatigue, especially when done hard and frequently. With Pilates you leave feeling good and you quickly notice the benefits during your everyday life. Such benefits include gaining core strength, improving balance, better coordination, and decreasing stress. The initial workout may lead to some soreness in the following days as your body adapts to its new lifestyle. However, future workouts become increasingly alleviating and rewarding. A Pilates goer can attend a 50 minute class once a week to maintain physical appearance and just twice a week to achieve physical improvement. Pilates is for all ages and body types, and is completely adaptable to meet your specific needs. Camila is known to think on her feet when designing a custom workout. If you arrived for your session with neck pain from the night before, Camila will focus on the pain and work the relevant muscle groups to alleviate it.

Pilates was founded by a German immigrant from the late 1800s, Joseph Pilates. However, It wasn’t until during World War 1 and while Mr. Pilates was in an interment camp that he developed the first Pilates machines. The first machines were built out of the limited resources at his disposal. Ropes, bed sheets and springs were assembled in a way that enabled fellow injured inmates to move, stretch, alleviate and recover. Now, with nearly a hundred years of advancement and influences from medical professionals and atheletes around the world, modern Pilates sticks to its roots, but has become even more perfected. With an expert like Camila guiding you through it all, you’ll be well on your way to feeling more agile and relaxed in no time!
